Driving Test

Once you have passed your theory test you are allowed to book your practical driving test. However, it's important that you don't book it until both you and your instructor feel that you are ready! The current driving test fee is £62 and you can book your test here.

At the test centre the examiner will ask to see your licence (both parts) and will ask you to sign the residency and insurance declarations. You will then go out to where the car is parked and will do the two vehicle check (show me tell me) questions. You can access the questions here.

The driving test lasts for around 38- 40 minutes and will involve many of the normal traffic situations that you will have met on your driving lessons - eg roundabouts, traffic lights, pedestrian crossings. You cannot drive on the motorway until you have passed your test but your test may involve a section of dual carriageway driving. There will also be a section of the test called "independent driving". This can be carried out either by the examiner asking you to follow the road signs towards a particular destination, or using sat nav. This section will last 20 minutes.

You may also be asked to carry out a controlled stop (emergency stop) and one of the following manoeuvres - parallel park, reverse bay parking, driving forward into a bay and reversing out or pulling up on the right before reversing and pulling away again.

At the end of the test the examiner will tell you if you have passed. You are allowed up to 15 minor faults but no major faults on the test.
